A 12mm thick cement backerboard for tile and stone, to be used as an alternative to plasterboard for tiling on walls.
HardieBacker 12mm is a water-resistant, cement backerboard for tile that fastens directly to the wooden frame of a wall. A good tile job begins with using the right materials, and when tiling onto a wall in a wet area, there are a few important things to consider.
- HardieBacker cement backer board is impervious to water damage and will not rot, crack, or swell in the wettest conditions.
- It contains MouldBlock Technology™, an anti-mould additive that prevents unseen mould growth behind the walls. It contains no paper facing, a food source for mould or gypsum, which can disintegrate with continuous water exposure.
- Unlike plasterboard, HardieBacker board has a unique cement formulation providing a strong bond to all ceramic or natural stone tiles for applied weights of up to 100kg/m2.
- It is non-combustible and carries an A1 fire rating. HardieBacker 12mm can also be used on the floor when additional height is needed, behind a boiler, or even behind a multi-fuel or log burning stove.
Why should you use HardieBacker cement backer board instead of plasterboard and plywood?
HardieBacker vs Plasterboard
In frequently wet areas such as showers, wet rooms or bathrooms, moisture penetration can cause serious problems which can result in costly failures.
When PLASTERBOARD meets moisture... it can
Rot Plasterboards contain a gypsum core. They retain moisture and can disintegrate, eventually causing tiles to become unstuck.
Grow mould The paper facing of plasterboards can serve as a food source for mould.

Stay strong HardieBacker board is the strongest backerboard on market, even when wet supports up to 100kg/m2.
HardieBacker vs Plywood
In frequently wetted areas such as showers, wet rooms or bathrooms, moisture penetration can cause serious problems for certain tiling backgrounds, which can result in costly failures.
When PLYWOOD meets moisture... it can
Cause tile and/or grout cracks Plywood by its nature can expand and contract when subjected to frequent moisture. This can lead to cracks appearing in tiles or grout lines and often replacement is the only solution.
When HARDIEBACKER meets moisture... it will stay
Dimensionally stable Made of 90% Portland cement and sand with selected additives and 10% cellulose fibre, HardieBacker Cement Backerboard does not expand or contract even when wet.
